Modern Slavery ACT 2018 (NSW) Inquiry
In June 2018 the NSW Parliament passed the Modern Slavery Act 2018. This ground-breaking legislation was welcomed by ACRATH. The Act recognised the NSW Government’s role in preventing human trafficking and slavery through education and legislation, protecting those who have been exploited by providing support and opportunities for rehabilitation and prosecuting those responsible for exploitative practices. Unfortunately the Act has net yet been implemented.
The NSW Legislative Council Standing Committee on Social Issues is currently conducting an inquiry into the Modern Slavery Act 2018. ACRATH was pleased to partner with CRA (Catholic Religious Australia) in providing a submission for this inquiry. A copy of the submission may be accessed by clicking here and then selecting Submission 22 .
Slavery happens in NSW and beyond. ACRATH and CRA believe implementing the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW) is a matter of urgency. In doing so measures would be put in place to help some of the most vulnerable in our society.
