Action for October

October 2020 Post

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed each year on 17th October. The theme of this day for 2020 – Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for – addresses the challenge of achieving social and environmental justice for all. While progress has been made in addressing income poverty, there has been less success in addressing the other important dimensions of poverty, including the rapidly growing impact of the environment, within a more holistic approach. Given that poverty makes millions of people vulnerable to being exploited and trafficked, organize a letter-writing campaign asking federal politicians to increase rather than continuing to cut Australia’s aid to developing nations.

The October page of the 2020 ACRATH calendar highlights the issue of Forced marriage. The Australian Federal Police report there were 92 referrals of forced marriage in Australia during the 2019/2020 financial year. ACRATH has prepared a number of resources concerning the issue of forced marriage. Access these resources here.
