Anti-Slavery Commissioner Established
On 28 May 2024 the Australian Parliament passed the Modern Slavery Amendment (Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner) Bill 2023 to enable the establishment of Australia’s first federal Anti-Slavery Commissioner. The Commissioner role will include engaging with and supporting victims and survivors of modern slavery and supporting business to address risks of modern slavery practices in their operations and supply chains. A recruitment process will now begin.
For many years ACRATH has campaigned for a Commonwealth Anti-Slavery Commissioner. It has been a feature of annual visits to Parliament, advocacy prior to the passing of the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), National Roundtable on Human Trafficking and Slavery discussions and awareness raising presentations and publications. ACRATH congratulates the Australian Parliament in taking this important step that will significantly contribute to the fight against modern slavery in Australia.
