Contemporary Slavery – Causes and Consequences

UN Special Rapporteur Reports to Human Rights Council
Urmila Bhoola, UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, has presented her report to the thirty-sixth session of the UN Human Rights Council. In the report she comments on the challenges and obstacles encountered by persons subjected to contemporary forms of slavery to access justice and remedies. She spoke of the responsibility of States “to respect, promote and fulfill the right to have access to justice by making available a system of effective remedies to persons subject to their jurisdiction.” Her report includes a number of recommendations addressed to member States of the United Nations, UN agencies and businesses.
