Day of the Girl Child 2021
Digital generation. Our generation is the theme for the International Day of the Girl Child in 2021.
During the Covid-19 pandemic the use of digital platforms for education, working and connecting with family and friends has accelerated. However not only is there a gender gap in the use of technology and the internet, girls are also less likely to own their own devices or to gain access to tech-related jobs.
In his message to mark the International Day of the Girl Secretary General António Guterres said:
“Today’s girls are part of a digital generation. It is our responsibility to join with them in all their diversity, amplify their power and solutions as digital change-makers, and address the obstacles they face in the digital space.”
Without education and employment opportunities girls and young women can be vulnerable to human trafficking and modern slavery.
