Exit Trafficking Conviction
In April 2024 a Victorian court found a man guilty of exit trafficking after he stranded his wife overseas. The man was in an arranged marriage with the woman who was in Australia on a sposored partner visa. He limited his parner’s freedom and access to money. Without telling her he withdrew support for her partner visa making it invalid.
In 2014 they travelled to Sudan with their children. He secretly changed his partner’s ticket to a non-return but he returned with their children leaving her stranded without a passport. It would be 2 years before the woman was able to return to Australia. The man was arrested in 2022. Exit trafficking carries a maximum penalty of 12 years imprisonment. Read more…
