Forced Marriage is Family Violence

A recent Monash University report, Forced Marriage as a Form of Family Violence in Victoria, highlights the fact that recognising forced marriage as a form of family violence can lead to better support for victim-survivors. Victoria is the only state in Australia that has recognised forced mariage a family violence in law. The study explores the impact of the legal recognition of forced marriage as a form of family violence in Victoria since 2019, not only for victim-survivors but also for practitioners and front-line workers. While identifying the issue and providing support resources is a step in the right direction, it is also important to ensure the resources are accessible by those who need them.
The report authors, Shih Joo and Laura Vidal, acknowledge the support and funding received from the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre that made this research possible.
