Much of the world’s chocolate is produced using cocoa beans that have been harvested by trafficked children or forced labour. The West African countries of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are two of the largest producers and exporters of cocoa in the world. The most recent figures estimate that 1.8 million children in West Africa are involved in the industry and some are forced or trafficked. Buying FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ certified chocolate to ensures that no slave labour has been used in the chocolate’s production.
