Out-of-Sight-Out-of-MindFisheries (Foreign Charter Vessels and Other Matters) Amendment Bill

The New Zealand Parliament has unanimously passed a bill that will require all foreign fishing vessels operating in New Zealand waters to fly the New Zealand and operate under New Zealand laws.  In the past there has been human rights and labour abuses on these foreign vessels.  In a statement after the bill was passed Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said, “This bill will help maintain our reputation around the world. It shows that we are serious about the fair treatment of fishing crews, the safety of vessels and New Zealand’s international reputation for ethical and sustainable fishing practices. It will help ensure fair standards for all fishing crews working in our waters.” Read more…
