Past, Present & Future of Modern Slavery
A panel session and book launch to discuss the past, present and future of modern slavery in Australia will be held on Friday 23rd August, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
Australia’s history of slavery, including the exploitation of First Nations Australians, is often silenced and overlooked. Today, modern slavery remains a prominent issue with an estimated 41,000 people experiencing slavery in Australia in 2021. The future of Australia’s response to modern slavery is rapidly evolving with the recent introduction of a Commonwealth Anti-Slavery Commissioner who will oversee overall antislavery efforts including anticipated amendments to human trafficking and slavery offences and the Modern Slavery Act (2018).
