Slavery in Australia?
As part of ACRATH’s National Conference which is being held virtually this year, ACRATH members and friends listened to Waskam Emelda Davis, Chairwoman of Australian South Sea Islanders Port Jackson, as she answered ‘Was there slavery in Australia?’
We now know there definitely was. The experiences of more than 60,000 South Sea islanders stolen from their homes and their families to work in the cane fields and whaling industries earning very low pay (if at all), shocked many of us and challenged us to walk alongside the South Sea Islanders in their call for recognition in Australia’s proud multicultural communities.
