Talking About Forced Marriage

Forced Marriage - ASA

ACRATH congratulates Anti-Slavery Australia on the launch of Talking About Forced Marriage: A Toolkit for Young People. The Toolkit is designed to help people to start conversations around forced marriage, in their wider communities and with those closest to them. It has been developed as part of our Speak Now project. This Toolkit aims to:

  • Show what forced marriage looks like in Australia today
  • Help you to support someone at risk
  • Guide you through a 10 step-process for starting conversations and advocating for change, in a way that works for you

It’s estimated that there are thousands of people living in forced marriages in Australia today. Most of these people are never identified, which means that they may be left alone in navigating what can be a very challenging and scary situation. We know that young women and girls are most at risk – between 2021 and 2022, 51% of reported Australian forced marriages involved people under the age of 18. No matter your age, the impacts can be devastating.
