Uyghur Forced Labour

Did you know 1 in 5 garments worldwide are linked to Uyghur cotton? The systematic oppression of the Uyghur people by the Chinese Government is undeniable, and the exploitation of detained Uyghurs as a captive labour force is clear.

Senator Rex Patrick has been calling on the Federal Government to pass legislation forcing companies to disclose details of their supply chains. He sponsored the Customs Amendment (Banning Goods Produced By Uyghur Forced Labour) Bill 2020 to ban the importation of goods from Xinjiang in the People’s Republic of China as well as goods from other parts of the People’s Republic of China that are produced in whole or part by forced labour. The  Senate referred the Customs Amendment (Banning Goods Produced By Uyghur Forced Labour) Bill 2020 to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee for inquiry.

ACRATH has join with Be Slavery Free and other Coalition members in presenting a submission for this Inquiry. A copy of the submission may be accessed here (Submission No 48). It is important that we take a strong stand against this well documented abuse of hundreds of thousands of Uyghur people in Xinjiang.
